Argentina's far-right president Javier Milei has escalated tensions over the Falkland Islands by threatening sanctions on oil firms that seek to drill in the area.

Milei made the announcement during a national address, citing a shift in US policy under President Donald Trump as evidence of Argentina's growing claim to the islands, known locally as Las Malvinas.

He stated that Trump had declared the US was re-evaluating its position on the islands due to the UK's lack of support for the war against Iran, which he claimed was a key factor in the UK's decline as a global power.

Milei also emphasized Argentina's growing economic and political influence, stating 'Argentina’s future is flourishing and will prevail'.
