Argentina Escalates Pressure on Energy Companies in Falkland Islands Dispute

Argentina has escalated its pressure on energy companies operating in the disputed Falkland Islands (Malvinas), ahead of the territory's first oil production. The move, which comes as a result of President Javier Milei's government increasing scrutiny on companies with ties to the islands, has sparked a long-standing sovereignty dispute between Argentina and the UK.

The press office of President Javier Milei circulated statements from Halliburton, SLB, and Baker Hughes, confirming that these oilfield service firms have no involvement in oil activities off the islands. Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno has emerged as a vocal critic of energy companies linked to the nascent offshore industry.

Argentine businessman Eduardo Elsztain defended his Dolphin Fund Ltd.'s 2% stake in FIH Group Plc, which is the parent company of the Falkland Islands Company. He stated that the investment was intended to deepen economic and commercial ties between Argentina and the islands rather than undermine Argentina's sovereignty claim.

The heightened scrutiny coincides with the approach of first offshore oil production, raising the economic stakes in a dispute that led to war between Argentina and the UK in 1982.
