Argentina Steps in to Fill Asian Oil Demand Amid Middle East Disruptions
Asian crude oil importers, including China, Japan, and South Korea, are turning to Argentina as an alternative supplier due to supply losses from the Middle East. The Iran war has disrupted oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, prompting refiners in Asia to seek out new sources.
Argentina's Medanito crude is being produced at the Vaca Muerta shale basin, where oil and gas production has been rising in recent years. This oil is comparable in quality to US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) and can be shipped directly from South America to Asia without passing through any chokepoints.
The Asian appetite for Argentinian oil has increased significantly this year, with Argentina's oil sales in Asia jumping from 2025 levels. The Medanito crude is being sold at a discount of $1-$2 per barrel versus WTI, making it an attractive option for refiners looking to minimize their reliance on Middle Eastern oil.
