Armenia Gas Supplies Cut as Russia Punishes Independence Plans

Armenia's Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has reaffirmed his government's intention to reduce dependence on Russian natural gas imports. Just days later, Gazprom Armenia, a subsidiary of the Russian state-controlled energy giant Gazprom, announced a prolonged cutoff of supplies from September 15-25 due to 'scheduled maintenance and repair work in the Russian Federation.'

The company claimed that domestic reserves and additional gas supplies from Iran would offset the suspension, but this move is seen as punitive by many. Armenia received around 82% of its overall gas imports from Russia in 2025.

Azerbaijan has offered to supply Armenia with significant amounts of gas, but only if they finalize a provisional peace deal brokered in Washington in August 2025. Azerbaijan's insistence on an amendment to Armenia's constitution to recognize Baku's sovereignty over Nagorno-Karabakh is a major sticking point.

Pashinyan expressed hope that the pending TRIPP (Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity) would solve Armenia's gas-supply dilemma, but it is intertwined with the finalization of the Armenian-Azerbaijani peace deal.
