Armenia's Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has announced plans to diversify the country's natural gas imports, citing the need for energy independence and statehood. Speaking at a government briefing, Pashinyan emphasized that Armenia will pursue diversification in all sectors, regardless of fluctuations in natural gas prices. He noted that importing gas from multiple sources or utilizing transit revenues could be beneficial options for the country.

Pashinyan also addressed current gas pricing, stating that natural gas is not inexpensive in Armenia and that the price increases significantly between the border and the final consumer compared to other countries. He acknowledged that Gazprom Armenia earns substantial profits and that the government would examine services or arrangements provided free of charge or on preferential terms if necessary.

The prime minister's comments follow a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in April 2026, during which Putin pointed out the difference in gas prices between Russia and Europe. Putin noted that energy prices in Europe exceed $600 per 1,000 cubic meters, while Russia sells gas to Armenia for $177.50 per 1,000 cubic meters.
