Armenia Sticks to Russian-Iranian Gas Supply Model

Armenia has no plans to alter its existing system for importing gas from Russia and Iran, according to Hovhannes Abrahamyan, head of the Energy Regional Markets Department at the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure. Under current agreements, Russian gas is supplied to Armenia while Iranian gas is delivered under a 'gas-for-electricity' arrangement, in which Yerevan compensates Tehran for the fuel by supplying electricity.

Iran supplies over 400 million cubic meters of natural gas to Armenia each year, which is used to operate several thermal power plants. Abrahamyan stated that there are currently no plans to change this system or consider Iranian gas as an alternative to Russian supplies in case of disruptions.
