Asean Gold Demand Bucks Global Sell-Off
Asean gold demand remained resilient in Q2 despite global declines, driven by strong performances from Indonesia and Thailand. The World Gold Council's Gold Demand Trends Q2 2026 report shows that Asean demand for bars and coins rose to 307.1 tonnes, a 3% year-over-year decline globally.
Indonesia was one of the strongest-performing markets, with investment demand increasing by 40% to 14.5 tonnes. The country's currency weakness and economic concerns have reinforced gold's role as a store of value, according to the WGC. Indonesia formalized its gold ambitions in 2026 with a road map for fortifying its bullion ecosystem.
Thailand also recorded its strongest second quarter since 2019, with demand rising 10% on the year to 10.9 tonnes. Market participants reported growing participation from younger investors and strong interest in gold savings accounts.
