Asia Leads Global Gas Infrastructure Buildout Amid Climate Pressure

Natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) have become the fastest-growing sectors in the fossil fuel industry, driven by increasing demand for electricity and pressure from climate policies. Governments and utilities are turning to gas-fired power generation as a reliable source of energy alongside expanding renewable supplies.

According to data from Global Energy Monitor (GEM), Asia dominates the global landscape for gas-fired power generation capacity, with 950,000 megawatts currently in operation and an additional 140,000 MW under construction. The U.S. has the largest operating gas-fired capacity, but China has the most capacity under construction.

The Americas have the densest network of gas pipelines, with over 490,000 kilometers currently operating, while Asia has the most pipeline capacity under construction. China is leading the way in pipeline buildouts, followed by India.
