Asian Buyers Seek Alternatives to Australia's Wheat Amid Price Surge

Asian wheat buyers are turning to alternative suppliers as Australian wheat prices surge due to disruptions in Black Sea grain exports. By the end of August, Australia's Premium White wheat was priced at $312/t FOB Kwinana, while Standard White reached $302/t. This has made US and Indian wheat more attractive options for importers.

The Philippines recently purchased 295t CFR Batangas and Bataan of US Soft White Winter Wheat instead of an expected cargo of Australian ASW. Vietnamese buyers have also booked several cargoes of US wheat, while India is seen as a potential competitor to Australia in the region.

Indian wheat remains relatively expensive at around $325/t FOB but could become more competitive if global prices continue to rise. A recent shipment to Sri Lanka marks the first such deal in many years.
