Asian Energy Buyers Abandon Global Markets Amid Middle East Conflict

The Middle East conflict has sent shockwaves through global energy markets, forcing Asian nations to abandon their reliance on imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) and instead pursue domestic energy sovereignty.

For decades, LNG was touted as the ultimate transitional fuel for emerging markets, with tens of billions of dollars invested in maritime logistics and import terminals. However, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz has shattered this illusion, leaving Asian buyers without access to Qatari exports and spiking regional energy prices.

The Philippines' Batangas Terminal, completed in 2023 at a cost of millions, now sits idle as its operators scramble to secure new supplies. Prime Infra CEO Guillaume Lucci notes that the crisis has accelerated interest in exploiting domestic resources, stating 'the minute you depend on imports by definition, you're exposing yourself to market forces that are outside of the control of the importing nation.'

Nations across Asia are rapidly redeploying capital towards domestic fossil fuel and renewable energy projects, seeking to insulate themselves from foreign wars and global maritime blockades. The African continent is also taking note, with countries like Uganda pursuing sovereign extraction as a means to eliminate exposure to global chokepoints.
