Asian Equities Slide as Oil Prices Soar Amid Middle East Tensions
Indian markets are set for a soft opening on August 31 as Asian equities slide due to growing concerns over oil supply disruptions and inflationary pressures. The MSCI rebalancing under the new closing auction system is also expected to impact Indian shares.
The Nifty 50 declined by 0.2% and Sensex fell 0.12% at pre-open, signaling a lower start for benchmarks. Asian equities fell sharply on Monday, with Japan's Nikkei down 1.6% and South Korea's Kospi losing 2%.
Oil prices jumped over 2% after the US strike on Iran's Larak Island, pushing Brent crude towards $90 a barrel. Higher crude prices are a concern for India, which relies heavily on imports to meet its oil demand, widening the country's import bill and putting pressure on the rupee.
Oil-sensitive sectors such as upstream producers ONGC and Oil India could benefit from higher crude prices, while airlines, paints, chemicals, and other fuel-intensive industries may face margin pressure if prices remain elevated.
