Asian Markets Mixed as AI Stocks and Oil Prices Keep Investors on Edge
Asian markets were mixed on Tuesday as investors continued to watch AI stocks and oil prices. Softbank Group, which is a major investor in OpenAI, jumped over 8% in Tokyo morning trading after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company behind ChatGPT would likely wait until next year for a sale of its stock on Wall Street.
This would delay a potential influx of cash for Softbank and other early investors in OpenAI. Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 surged 0.8% to 63,993.22, while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.9% to 8,672.10.
The Shanghai Composite added 0.1% to 3,889.95, but Hong Kong's Hang Seng slipped 0.2% to 24,879.69. The comments from AI industry leaders warning of a slowdown needed for the safety of humanity also weighed on markets.
