Asian Shares Mixed After Wall Street Rally Fueled by Easing Oil Prices
Asian shares were mixed on Tuesday following a rally on Wall Street, which was fueled by easing oil prices. Despite this, regional investors remained cautious due to the recent joint U.S.-Japan currency intervention. Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 slipped 0.6% to 63,369.85, while the S&P/ASX 200 in Australia added 1.2% to 9,128.60.
The intervention has been seen as a significant development for the yen, with some analysts noting that it signals a real change in monetary policy rather than just a one-time defensive move. However, others have expressed uncertainty about its effectiveness, pointing out that it does not address the fundamental economic reasons behind currency fluctuations, including inflation and interest rates.
Oil prices gained 50 cents to $80.84 a barrel for U.S. crude in Asia on Tuesday, while Brent crude rose 63 cents to $84.40 a barrel. The yield on the 10-year Treasury sank to 4.68% from 4.75% late Friday.
