Asian Stocks Decline as Oil Prices Rise and Earnings Boost Fades

Asian stocks fell on Tuesday as concerns about rising oil prices offset the boost from strong corporate earnings. The region's markets were mixed, with some indices declining more than others.

The Nikkei 225 in Japan dropped 2.5% to 67,460.73, while South Korea's Kospi lost 1.6% to 6,869.83. In contrast, Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 0.2% to 25,513.65 and the Shanghai Composite added 0.2% to 3,990.30.

The higher oil prices are a major concern for investors, as they can lead to inflation. Brent crude rose 0.5% to $91.35 a barrel, while benchmark U.S. crude increased by 0.8% to $85.16 a barrel. The rising oil prices have been driven in part by the expiration of a 60-day deadline for an agreement to end the Iran war and resolve its nuclear program.

Analysts at BofA Securities noted that robust earnings reports, partly tied to artificial intelligence investments, have helped counter some of these concerns. However, investors remain cautious due to the impact of oil prices on energy costs and inflation.
