ASX Miners Flood Shareholders with Higher Dividends Amid Commodity Boom

ASX mining companies have delivered strong dividend payments this reporting season, surpassing expectations and reflecting the rising commodity prices.

The total payout from major miners BHP (BHP), Rio Tinto (RIO) and Fortescue (FMG) amounts to over $13 billion, with a further $2.73 billion coming from mid-cap companies.

Among those announcing maiden dividends or resuming payouts were Genesis Minerals (GMD), which paid 5c per share despite being in the process of merging with Vault Minerals; St Barbara (SBM) distributed cash from the sale of its Simberi gold mine to Chinese investors; and Alkane Resources (ALK) delivered a 2c dividend, its first payout in 60 years.

The boom in commodity prices has been driven by rising copper and lithium values, with PLS Group (PLS) resuming distributions after pausing them due to low spodumene prices. Mineral Resources (MIN), benefiting from the rebounding lithium market and Onslow Iron project, returned a 236% increase in NPAT to $1.2 billion.

However, not all miners have benefited equally; Fortescue's total dividend decreased slightly from $1.10 for FY25 to $1.08 for FY26 despite the copper price surge.
