Australia Abandons Fuel Discount Amid Global Oil Price Surge
The Australian government has confirmed that the fuel discount introduced in April to help motorists affected by the war in Iran will end on Monday, August 2. The original 50% discount, which reduced the price of petrol by 32 cents per liter, was dropped back to 16 cents from July and is now scheduled to expire.
Treasurer Jim Chalmers stated that it was 'never the government's intention' for the fuel excise relief to be permanent. The Heavy Vehicle Road User Charge discount will also end on Monday.
The decision comes despite escalating pressure on global oil prices due to the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran, with oil prices creeping over $US100 a barrel for the first time since May.
