Australian Copper Projects Shine Amid Global Rally
Copper prices have surged to new highs, placing the value of Australian copper projects in a new light. While Australia is not known as a major copper hotspot, with its modest scale of assets compared to global giants like Chile and Peru, there are opportunities in the country that have been overlooked.
Argonaut Funds Management's David Franklyn says that demand for copper has multiple drivers, including electrification, energy transition, and AI data centres. This is at a time when supply from major producers is stuttering due to production cuts and export restrictions. As a result, what were previously viewed as sub-scale assets in Australia are now gaining attention.
Franklyn notes that consolidation in the sector is underway, with companies like Evolution Mining buying Carnaby Resources and Austral Resources bidding to acquire Hammer Metals. Havilah Resources has also secured a commitment from Sandfire Resources to develop its Kalkaroo project in South Australia's Curnamona province.
Copper prices have been driven up by physical tightness, with strong demand from smelters for concentrate and shortages from mines in multiple jurisdictions. El Niño weather patterns have hurt production in Chile and Peru this year, while production cuts at major mines like Ivanhoe and Zijin's Kamoa-Kakula mine in the DRC and Freeport's Grasberg mine and smelter in Indonesia have compounded supply shocks.
Argonaut's stock pick of the month is KGL Resources, which has secured funding to develop its Jervois project in the Northern Territory. The project is expected to produce 276,000t of copper, 10.5Moz of silver and 87,000oz of gold over 10 years of mining.
