Australian Wheat Prices Soar to Three-Year High Amid Black Sea Disruptions
Australia's wheat prices have reached a three-year high due to disruptions in Black Sea grain supplies and shifting demand from Asia. Since July 6, when attacks on Black Sea ports intensified, ASW1 wheat prices have increased by $25/t to reach $291/t FOB Kwinana on August 24. This is the highest level since July 2023.
The Australian market is gaining traction due to reduced availability of Ukrainian and Russian wheat during a key shipping period to Asia. Southeast Asian buyers are increasingly turning to Australia for September-October shipment, while freight costs from the Black Sea to Southeast Asia have risen above $80/t.
Alternative shipments of Russian wheat through Baltic ports remain economically unattractive due to high logistics costs. As a result, reduced Black Sea availability is strengthening Australia's competitive position in key Asian markets.
