Australia's $180 Billion Energy Export Earnings: A Geological Gift
Australia's $180 billion energy export earnings are a result of its unique geological features and infrastructure investments. The continent sits atop one of the world's most extraordinary concentrations of sedimentary basins, ancient cratonic geology, and thermally stable rock formations.
This combination has produced hydrocarbon deposits, coal seams, and uranium mineralisation of exceptional scale. In 2023-24, Australia generated $180 billion from its energy resources export earnings, which represents roughly 27% of the country's total export revenue.
The energy export sector is dominated by liquefied natural gas (LNG), which accounted for approximately 38.6% of total energy export revenue in 2022-23 at $92.2 billion. Australia's LNG export infrastructure is concentrated across three primary hubs: the Pilbara coast, the Browse Basin offshore facilities, and the Curtis Island export terminal complex.
The country's coal export sector operates across two commercially distinct market segments: thermal coal for electricity generation and metallurgical coal for steelmaking. Thermal coal contributed A$65.5 billion in 2022-23, while metallurgical coal contributed A$61.9 billion.
