Axpo and Vitol Bring LNG Bunkering to Italy's Port of Civitavecchia
Axpo and Vitol have made significant strides in expanding liquefied natural gas (LNG) refuelling across Italy's major cruise hubs. The companies have completed their first LNG bunkering operation at the Port of Civitavecchia, marking a crucial milestone.
The operation saw Axpo's 7,500m³ Italian bunkering vessel, Green Pearl, refuel a flagship vessel of an international cruise line on August 9th, 2026. This development establishes Civitavecchia as the latest location to offer LNG services, following earlier launches in Genoa and Naples.
Vitol highlighted the role of LNG and bio-LNG in reducing emissions from bunkering operations, emphasizing their importance in decarbonisation efforts. Axpo's expansion demonstrates the rapid growth of its low-emission maritime fuel supply chain, meeting rising demand from major cruise operators.
