B.C. Accelerates LNG Expansion Plans with Musqueam Partnership

The British Columbia government has accelerated plans for the expansion of FortisBC's Tilbury liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in Delta, citing its potential to advance economic reconciliation through First Nations ownership opportunities.

As part of its Look West strategy, the province issued an Order in Council that exempts Phase 1B of the expansion from the need for a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity under the Utilities Commission Act. This move provides regulatory certainty and optimizes FortisBC's investment, establishing a framework to support the project.

Musqueam Indian Band will acquire an interest in the project through a partnership with FortisBC, creating an opportunity for economic reconciliation while supporting cleaner alternative fuels. Phase 1B is expected to increase the facility's capacity and position the Port of Vancouver as a leading LNG marine fuelling hub.
