B.C. Government Backs Controversial LNG Expansion Despite Community Concerns

The B.C. government has announced plans to proceed with the Tilbury LNG expansion project despite opposition from coastal communities and wildlife advocates.

Stand.earth Oceans Campaigner Anna Barford stated, 'The decision of the B.C. government to exempt FortisBC from important regulatory oversight poses grave risks to coastal communities and vulnerable species of wildlife.'

The project's proponents have applied for an expansion that community members have deemed excessive, with hundreds of commenters raising concerns about the impact on marine life, including orcas and salmon.

FortisBC's expansion plans would increase tanker traffic in the Salish Sea, exacerbating existing environmental issues. The Tilbury LNG gas terminal is located near one of Canada's most productive salmon habitats, which feeds over 1.7 million migratory birds annually.
