B.C. Government Backs Major LNG Expansion in Metro Vancouver

The British Columbia government is supporting an expansion of FortisBC's Tilbury LNG facility in Delta, which could produce up to 3.4 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per year.

The proposed Phase 2 expansion would increase the facility's production capacity by 13 times and allow for the export of roughly 2.5 million tonnes of LNG annually.

FortisBC has been working on the expansion for over a decade, with support from the provincial government. In July, Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions Adrian Dix announced the government's backing for an earlier expansion proposal, Phase 1B, which will add a marine jetty to the site and increase production capacity to 650,000 tonnes of LNG per year.

The Environmental Assessment Office is currently evaluating the proposed Phase 2 expansion, which would include a new LNG storage tank with a capacity of up to 142,400 cubic metres and new gas liquefaction facilities capable of producing up to 7,700 tonnes of LNG per day.
