B.C. Government Greenlights Accelerated Expansion of Tilbury LNG Facility

The British Columbia government has granted FortisBC permission to accelerate its $2-billion expansion of the Tilbury LNG facility in Delta, B.C. The exemption from needing a permit will save time and allow the project to move forward, creating 1,100 jobs during construction and generating $260 million in tax revenues.

The existing LNG facility on the site has been in operation since 1971 as a natural gas storage facility, but it's now producing LNG for vessels and working with the Vancouver Port authority to develop a marine refuelling service. The expansion will play a role in decarbonizing domestic and global shipping.

Energy Minister Adrian Dix says LNG is significantly cleaner than conventional marine fuels such as diesel, and the expansion will improve emissions reductions and increase the competitiveness of the port.
