Baltic Ports Block Russian Grain Transit, Tightening Wheat Markets

Lithuania and Latvia are pushing to block Russian grain from transiting through their Baltic ports, narrowing the map for wheat buyers. This development comes as the Black Sea corridor remains disrupted, leaving fewer functioning routes than export figures alone imply.

Russian wheat shipments over August and September have run at low levels due to the lack of transit options. Commercial buyers are now facing a shorter list of origins that can actually load, with the constraint stemming from politics rather than harvest size.

International buyers have started sourcing elsewhere, with Libya confirming a purchase of 33,000 tonnes of French wheat. European Union wheat exports have caught up somewhat on last year's pace, but the smaller pool of available wheat is causing competition among buyers.

The uncertainty surrounding Black Sea routes has also led to divided tender behavior, with Pakistan tendering for 750,000 tonnes of wheat while Saudi Arabia canceled an 85,000 tonne tender. This split reflects a genuine disagreement about whether to secure coverage now or wait for de-escalation that could ease prices.
