Bangladesh Approves Fertilizer and LNG Imports Ahead of Agricultural Season

The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) has approved the import of 70,000 tonnes of phosphate-based fertilizer from Morocco and four LNG cargoes to meet domestic demand. The committee, chaired by Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, met at the Bangladesh Secretariat in Dhaka.

The approved fertilizer procurement includes 40,000 tonnes (10 percent) of Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) and 30,000 tonnes (10 percent) of Triple Superphosphate (TSP) from Moroccan supplier OCP Nutricrops under a Government-to-Government arrangement. The DAP will be procured at $894 per tonne, while the TSP will be imported at $669.33 per tonne.

The CCGP also approved four LNG cargoes to meet the country's energy demand, with three of them being procured through international competitive bidding. One cargo was approved under Clause 7.2(b) of an existing Sale and Purchase Agreement (SPA). The total estimated cost for fertilizer procurement stands at Taka 440.92 crore ($5.36 million), while the LNG cargoes will be procured at varying prices ranging from $23.98 to $28.03 per MMBtu.
