Bangladesh Approves Import of 18 LNG Cargoes Amid Energy Security Concerns

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) in Bangladesh has given in-principle approval to import 18 cargoes of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from Total Energies. The decision was made at a meeting held on September 9, 2026, with Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury in the chair.

The proposal aims to meet Bangladesh's emergency gas demand amid an unstable geopolitical situation and concerns over energy security due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Under the approved plan, two LNG cargoes per month will be imported from October 2026 to June 2027. The agreement also includes a provision for procuring additional LNG cargoes if required, subject to mutual consent of the two parties.
