Bangladesh Awaits LNG Lifeline as Gas Crisis Deepens

The Bangladesh government is expecting ten LNG cargoes to arrive in September, which should help ease the current gas crisis. According to Petrobangla director AKM Mizanur Rahman, eight of these cargos have already been finalized through procurement deals, while the remaining two are still being tendered.

The government brought six LNG cargoes into the country in August, and nine arrived in July. The two floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) in Maheshkhali are currently supplying 711 million cubic feet per day (MMcfd) of gas to the national grid, with a total of 2329 MMcfd now being received.

BNP's acting secretary general, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's adviser Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, said that normal gas supply across the country is expected to be restored by the first or second week of September. He attributed the energy crisis to the ongoing global crisis due to the US-Iran war and disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
