Bangladesh Bolsters LNG Infrastructure Amid Rising Demand
Bangladesh is planning to develop two new liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminals by 2030, according to State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit.
The government aims to commission a floating storage and regasification unit by 2028, which will have a capacity of approximately 600 million cubic feet per day. The land-based terminal at Matarbari is expected to be operational by 2030 and will have a regasification capacity of around 1,000 million cubic feet per day.
Bangladesh currently relies on two floating LNG import terminals with a combined capacity of 1,100 million cubic feet per day. However, the country's demand for gas is expected to rise significantly over the coming decades, requiring an additional 3-4 million metric tons per annum of LNG between 2026 and 2030.
The demand is expected to increase further to around 17-18 million metric tons per annum between 2031 and 2040. Bangladesh imported nearly 7 million tonnes of LNG last year, with the majority coming from Qatar. However, due to supply disruptions caused by the US-Iran war, the country has been relying on spot imports this year.
