Bangladesh Business Leaders Urge Revival of Idle Power Plants Amid Energy Crisis
Business leaders in Bangladesh have proposed bringing idle power plants back into operation to reduce pressure on gas supplies used for electricity generation. This would allow more gas to be diverted to manufacturing units, alleviating some of the pressure from the ongoing energy crisis.
The proposal was made at a discussion at The Daily Star Centre in Dhaka, where top business leaders emphasized the need for short-term measures to mitigate the immediate energy crisis triggered by the US-Israeli war on Iran. The war has disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and severely affected liquefied natural gas (LNG) deliveries from the Middle East.
Private companies hold a large share of oil-based generation, while coal-fired capacity is driven by large public-private or state ventures. Business leaders believe that bringing idle power plants back online would help reduce some of the pressure on gas supplies and allow more gas to be diverted to manufacturing units.
