Bangladesh Could Rely Heavily on Indian Wheat Amid Black Sea Blockade

The ongoing blockade of deep-sea ports in Ukraine and Russia has significant implications for global wheat trade, particularly in Asia. According to ASAP Agri CEO Khrystyna Serebriakova, if the blockade persists, Ukraine's wheat exports could fall to 5-10 million tons in the 2026/27 marketing year, while Russian wheat exports may decline by around 25 million tons.

Asian countries heavily reliant on Black Sea region supplies will need to seek alternative suppliers. Bangladesh is particularly vulnerable due to its heavy dependence on imports from this area. If the blockade continues, it's likely that India will become a major supplier of wheat to Bangladesh.

India has been identified as a key beneficiary of the situation due to its large crop, opening of an export quota, and geographical proximity to Bangladesh. Sandeep Bansal, managing director of Grain Flour India Pvt. Ltd., believes that within 5-50 days, Bangladesh could become largely dependent on Indian wheat supplies.
