Bangladesh Energy Crisis: Experts Call for Long-Term Solutions Amid Industrial Disruption
Experts are calling for long-term solutions to Bangladesh's energy crisis, which has led to severe gas and power shortages affecting industrial production and export orders.
Bangladesh Chamber of Industries President Anwar Ul Alam Chowdhury (Parvez) said that manufacturers are struggling to maintain production due to the shortages, resulting in a 35-40% fall in industrial output. Many businesses are also at risk of defaulting on bank loans despite paying high utility bills.
Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmood acknowledged the challenges facing the country's energy sector, stating that domestic gas production cannot be increased suddenly and LNG supplies are delayed due to an affected floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU).
