Bangladesh Gas Crisis Deepens Amid Rising LNG Prices
The gas and electricity crisis in Bangladesh has worsened due to rising international liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices amid the Middle East conflict, causing supply shortages.
LNG prices have nearly doubled, making it difficult for the government to secure supplies, even after relaxing procurement rules and offering higher prices.
Disruptions in gas production and supply are affecting power generation, industries, compressed natural gas (CNG) stations, and households, with around 70% of industrial production capacity remaining unutilized due to insufficient gas supply.
The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has requested the government to resume heavy fuel oil-based power plants instead of relying on inefficient gas-fired power plants.
