Bangladesh Gas Shortage Cripples Transportation Services

A severe gas shortage in Bangladesh has crippled transportation services and daily life in Dhaka and other areas of the country. The crisis began on July 21 when a fire damaged one of the two boilers at a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) in Cox's Bazar, reducing the country's gas supply to below 2,150 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd).

Commuters are facing problems reaching their destinations on time due to unavailability of public transport. Many drivers have been waiting in long queues for hours to get a gas supply, with some standing overnight until the following morning or afternoon.

'On other days, I can easily get a CNG by standing on Banasree E-Block Avenue Road. But today, even after waiting for more than 1 hour, I did not find a single empty vehicle,' said a commuter to The Dhaka Tribune.
