Bangladesh Gas Shortage Wrecks Public Transportation

A gas shortage in Bangladesh has caused widespread disruptions to public transportation and household life. Many compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered auto-rickshaws and public transport vehicles have stopped operating due to a lack of gas supply, leaving commuters facing difficulties.

Drivers reported waiting in long queues for hours or even overnight to get a gas supply, but still came up empty-handed. Students, office-goers, and patients are struggling to reach their destinations on time because of the unavailability of public transport.

'On other days, I can easily get a CNG by standing on Banasree E-Block Avenue Road,' said a commuter. 'But today, even after waiting for more than 1 hour, I did not find a single empty vehicle.'

Commuters are facing higher fares as there is a shortage of public transport on the road. Auto-rickshaws operating on CNG are not taking fare as per meters while contract fares have doubled and tripled in some cases.
