A gas supply crisis has hit Bangladesh due to a shortage of LNG cargoes. The Excelerate terminal, which is one of two floating terminals at Moheshkhali in Cox's Bazar for supplying imported LNG, suspended gas supply around midday on Wednesday after exhausting its stored LNG.

An official from Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Limited (RPGCL) confirmed that the Excelerate terminal stopped supplying gas due to the lack of an LNG cargo. Petrobangla data shows that total gas supply in the country at 12 noon on Wednesday stood at 2,289 million cubic feet, with 1,628 million cubic feet coming from domestic wells and 661 million cubic feet from LNG.

The non-arrival of several cargoes purchased through the direct procurement method has worsened the crisis. These cargoes were scheduled to arrive this month, but none have arrived yet. The Excelerate Energy terminal was shut down after a fire on July 21, and supply increased last Saturday when the Summit terminal became fully operational and the Excelerate terminal partially restarted.
