Bangladesh Govt Chooses LNG Over Fuel Deals Amid Energy Demand
The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase has recommended direct purchase of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from TotalEnergies to meet Bangladesh's energy demand.
The committee decided this at a meeting chaired by Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, where it also withheld final approval for five proposals to procure diesel, Jet A-1 and furnace oil. The government plans to purchase these fuels through international open tenders under five packages for September-December 2026.
The estimated cost of the combined procurement is around Tk11,914 crore (approximately $1.3 billion USD). The committee directed authorities to negotiate with recommended suppliers on proposed premiums and base prices before finalizing deals.
