Bangladesh Grapples with Gas Shortage, Seeks Long-term Solutions
The state minister for planning in Bangladesh acknowledged that the country is facing an inadequate supply of gas and electricity to meet domestic demand. Zonayed Abdur Rahim Saki said that the government has been emphasizing boosting domestic gas production and generating renewable energy to overcome this shortfall.
In a meeting with journalists, he shared that the current reserve of one and a half months will be rapidly raised to three months and subsequently to six months in phases. The government is also working on establishing necessary LNG stations to reduce reliance on imports.
The state minister noted that technical glitches at the floating Liquefied Natural Gas terminal in Moheshkhali caused minor disruptions in nationwide gas supplies, but these have already been resolved.
