Bangladesh Joins Saudi-Led Alliance to Secure Bab al-Mandab Strait
The Saudi-led maritime defence alliance has gained support from Bangladesh as it aims to protect the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait in the Red Sea.
The alliance, which includes 14 countries including Bangladesh, was established by Saudi Arabia in response to threats from Yemen's Iran-backed Houthis.
The Houthis have imposed a maritime embargo on Saudi Arabia and claimed attacks targeting Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea and oil infrastructure in the kingdom.
The alliance is aimed at enhancing maritime security, safeguarding freedom of navigation, securing international trade routes, and protecting shared maritime interests in the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the Red Sea, and the Gulf of Aden.
