Bangladesh is introducing incentives for rooftop solar systems to alleviate power shortages and reduce reliance on imported fuels. The South Asian nation, home to 175 million people, has been grappling with its worst power shortages in years due to a lack of natural gas and global fuel supply concerns.

The government's programme offers 10.50 taka ($0.086) per kilowatt-hour for surplus electricity fed into the national grid for three years for consumers who install eligible rooftop solar systems by February 28, 2027.

The initiative is part of Bangladesh's goal to generate 20% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and increase that share to 30% by 2040. Currently, the country has about 1,559 megawatts of renewable energy capacity, mostly solar.
