At the Tokyo LNG Conference on September 11, 2026, Anindya Islam Amit, MP and State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources of Bangladesh emphasized the importance of reliability, diversification, affordability, and flexibility in ensuring energy security. He noted that due to geopolitical shifts, supply disruptions, and market volatility in the global energy landscape, energy security can no longer be limited merely to the availability of fuel.

Bangladesh's energy consumption is rising rapidly due to population growth, industrialization, urbanization, and increasing demand for electricity, with natural gas playing a vital role in power generation. However, domestic production is insufficient to meet growing demand, making LNG imports crucial. Currently, 1,100 MMCFD of gas is supplied daily through two Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRUs) with an annual demand of approximately 7 million tonnes (MTPA).

The State Minister informed that work is underway to expand LNG infrastructure, including the proposal to commission an additional FSRU with a capacity of 600 MMCFD at Moheshkhali by 2028 and a land-based LNG terminal with a capacity of 1,000 MMCFD at Matarbari by 2030. The country aims to increase its LNG capacity by an additional 3-4 MTPA during the 2026-30 period and raise it to 17-18 MTPA during the 2031-40 period.
