Bangladesh Revives Plans for Myanmar Gas Pipeline
Bangladesh has been exploring alternative sources of natural gas to meet its growing domestic energy demand. A recent meeting between Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood and Myanmar Ambassador UKyaw Soe Moe discussed importing gas from Myanmar through a cross-border pipeline.
The proposal to build a gas pipeline from Myanmar to Chattogram has been on the table for some time, but it gained momentum during the meeting. The minister emphasized that strengthening energy cooperation with neighboring countries is a priority under Bangladesh's 'Neighbours First' foreign policy.
The Myanmar ambassador welcomed the proposal and suggested exploring LNG supplies alongside the pipeline option. This revival of the long-standing proposal has sparked renewed interest in advancing regional connectivity initiatives, including the proposed China-Myanmar-Bangladesh economic corridor.
