Bangladesh Secures 18 LNG Cargoes from TotalEnergies Amid Geopolitical Tensions
The government of Bangladesh has approved a plan to import 18 LNG cargoes from France-based TotalEnergies over the next nine months. The agreement will provide two cargoes per month from October this year to June next year, with an option to purchase additional cargoes if needed.
The LNG will be priced at the Japan Korea Marker (JKM) plus $0.06 per million British thermal units (MMBtu), which is slightly lower than the rate agreed with US-based Gunvor for 14 LNG cargoes between 2026 and 2028. The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase approved the proposal in a meeting chaired by Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury.
The government is seeking alternative sources to meet urgent gas demand amid geopolitical instability stemming from the conflict in the Middle East. Bangladesh has long-term LNG supply agreements with Qatar and Oman, but supplies have been disrupted due to the Iran conflict.
