Bangladesh Seeks Diesel from India Amid Energy Crisis
Bangladesh is facing an energy shock due to disruptions in liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies, leading to power shortages and load-shedding across the country. To mitigate the crisis, Dhaka has turned to India for diesel imports.
The immediate gas problem was linked to a technical glitch at the Moheshkhali LNG terminals in Cox's Bazar, which resulted in a reduction of around 450 million cubic feet per day (MMcfd) of regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) supplies. This has caused low gas pressure for users of the Titas Gas distribution network.
Bangladesh imports nearly 95% of its energy needs and relies heavily on supplies from the Middle East. However, the current disruption has already contributed to panic buying, temporary rationing at fuel stations, and higher spot-market prices for LNG and other fuels.
