Bangladesh Seeks Energy Cooperation from Malaysia Amid Ongoing Gas Crisis

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has sought energy cooperation from his Malaysian counterpart, Anwar Ibrahim. The Bangladesh PM made a phone call to Ibrahim on July 28, following up on a letter sent earlier that day.

The request for cooperation came as the country struggles with an ongoing energy crisis, exacerbated by a technical fault at a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) that has disrupted gas supplies. State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Aninda Hasan Amit said the government is working to secure opportunities for importing liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Malaysia.

Amit stated that the Malaysian PM assured his Bangladesh counterpart of supporting energy cooperation after consulting relevant authorities in his country. The state minister also mentioned a recent visit by a Japanese delegation, including an adviser to the Japanese prime minister, to discuss expanding bilateral energy cooperation.
