Bangladesh Seeks Gas from Southeast Asia Amid Hormuz Disruptions
Bangladesh is seeking alternative sources of natural gas due to disruptions in shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which have exacerbated its energy crisis.
The country plans to buy liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Malaysia using ISO tanks as an immediate solution, and is also working on a pipeline project to import gas from Myanmar.
Bangladesh's reliance on Persian Gulf shipments has strained its economy, with the energy import bill swelling by an estimated US$2.5 billion after the Middle East conflict forced it to buy super-expensive LNG cargoes.
