Bangladesh Seeks LNG Security Amid Rising Fuel Demand
State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Aninda Islam Amit highlighted Bangladesh's current energy situation and future plans at an international LNG conference in Tokyo. The conference was held under the theme 'Advancing LNG for the Future: Resilience and Reliability.'
Amit emphasized the importance of reliability, diversification, affordability, and flexibility in ensuring modern energy security.
He noted that fuel consumption is rising rapidly due to population growth, industrialization, urbanization, and increasing electricity demand. Bangladesh currently relies on natural gas for power generation, fertiliser production, industries, and commercial activities but domestic production is insufficient.
To meet the growing demand, Bangladesh has increased its LNG imports. The country receives around 1,100 million cubic feet of LNG per day through two floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs), with an annual demand of nearly 7 million tonnes.
