Bangladesh Seeks Pipeline Gas Imports from Myanmar
Bangladesh has proposed importing natural gas from Myanmar through a pipeline to meet its substantial domestic demand. Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood conveyed this interest during a meeting with Myanmar Ambassador U Kyaw Soe Moe at his office in the Secretariat.
The energy minister mentioned that Bangladesh has a strong need for natural gas and would be interested in importing it from Myanmar through a pipeline to help meet this demand. In response, the Myanmar ambassador welcomed the proposal positively and also suggested discussing the possibility of supplying gas in liquefied form (LNG).
The two sides expressed interest in reviving discussions on constructing a pipeline from Myanmar to Chattogram. To accelerate bilateral energy sector discussions, the minister proposed a meeting between the respective energy ministers of the two countries.
