Bangladesh Seeks Rapid LNG Import from Myanmar Amid Energy Crisis

Bangladesh is seeking to import liquefied natural gas (LNG) from neighboring Myanmar, which could reduce transportation time to just 12 hours once a sales-and-purchase agreement is finalized.

The proposal was made by Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Iqbal Hasan Mahmood on Sunday after receiving the green signal from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

Mahmood said Myanmar has around 40% of its gas reserves in various oil and gas exploration projects being implemented with Chinese, Korean, Indian, and Thai energy companies, which can be exported to Bangladesh as LNG or through a pipeline.

Myanmar Ambassador Kyaw Soe Moe welcomed the proposal, suggesting that supplying gas as LNG would be the easiest way for energy cooperation between the two countries.
