Bangladesh's State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Aninda Islam Amit highlighted the country's energy security challenges at the 15th LNG Producer-Consumer Conference 2026 in Tokyo. He noted that fuel consumption is rising rapidly due to population growth, industrialization, urbanization, and increasing electricity demand.

Natural gas remains a key fuel for power generation, fertiliser production, industries, and commercial activities, but domestic production is insufficient to meet the growing demand. As a result, imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) has become increasingly important in the country's gas supply system.

Bangladesh currently receives around 1,100 million cubic feet of LNG per day through two floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs), with an annual demand of nearly 7 million tonnes. To meet this demand, infrastructure expansion work is progressing rapidly, including the launch of a new FSRU in Maheshkhali by 2028 and a land-based LNG terminal in Matarbari by 2030.

The state minister emphasized the importance of reliability, diversification, affordability, and flexibility in ensuring modern energy security. He also highlighted Bangladesh's efforts to attract international investors through transparent and investment-friendly policies.
